Anthem Offers Dental Insurance Through Chambers Of Commerce

Employees at small businesses in Connecticut will now have access to dental insurance provided by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Connecticut.

The deal was negotiated with the Chamber Insurance Trust and the state Chamber Leadership Cabinet to form a dental program for members of the 79 chambers of commerce in Connecticut. The chambers have a combined membership of about 40,000 businesses and other organizations, of which 85 percent have 10 or fewer employees.

People who work for businesses that are chamber members can sign up for an Anthem dental plan through the local chamber. Three plans have a variety of coverage, from basic services such as cleanings, X-rays and fillings to enhanced plans that have lower co-pays and higher annual limits.

One sample plan would cost less than $24 per month to cover just the worker, or less than $80 for a family.

"That's extremely important that we have a product that's marketable, and it can't be too expensive … and then obviously you have to have the network," said John Leone, president of Chamber Leadership Cabinet.

"Too often we were offered in the past programs that didn't have that capability and it had no network. So you could get the potential of buying dental insurance and none of the dentists in your area were able to take the card."

In Connecticut, Anthem has about 2,862 in-network dentists and oral surgeons for its Complete plan and 2,542 for its Prime plan. Anthem has one of the largest networks in the state. The Chamber Insurance Trust offers two other Anthem products, life and disability, through Anthem Life.

Anthem also will provide voluntary dental plans that businesses can offer to their workers at no cost to the business. Employees pay 100 percent of the premiums, but the plans are better than what would be available to them on the individual market, said James Augur, vice president of sales at Anthem.

"With our new portfolio of dental products, purchasing dental insurance for chamber members just became relatively convenient, easy and affordable," Augur said.
